Jai is a so-called practical man in London, who plans out every aspect of his life including his breakup with a gorgeous girlfriend named Meera. He fears commitment and believes that long distance relationships wont work as his girlfriend is on her way to India while his dream is to go to San Francisco to work at the Golden Gate.
He lets her go while still, she is the one in his heart. Meera moves on to India but even her heart has a place only for Jai. They continue being in constant touch and just can't let go off each other. The times they spend together in India are really magical.
Even after getting engaged and married to another man, Meera just can't forget Jai while he inevitably realizes that Meera is the one for him.
Veer Singh (Rishi Kapoor) is an old Punjabi in London who casually befriends Jai and narrates his experiences at love which are in stark contrast to the casual affairs of Jai. Veer literally flirted with danger to get his dream girl, Harleen Kaur.
These two love stories move parallel in a non-linear narrative where Saif is shown as the younger Veer, in a very innovative presentation. So we get to see Saif as the cool Jai on one hand, while he is also the passionate Sardar, Veer, on the other hand. Double delight for Saif fans.
Deepika is absolutely gorgeous as Meera. Any man would fall for her smile and long legs. Saif absolutely rocks in the emotionally heavy scenes while he puts on too much attitude in the scenes when he is required to be cool. Giselli Monteiro as Harleen is just a super-pretty face with nil emotive skills. Rishi Kapoor is the typical Punjabi and he is authentic.
The film has some stunning cinematography, delightful music and terrific chemistry between Saif and Deepika. The period setting in Veer-Harleen's love track is brilliant again.
The movie is crisp with all the ingredients of a potboiler. The ending is fairy-tale like and the scenes when Jai realizes that he can't live without Meera are really well done. The Main Kya Hoon song is a movie in itself so is the dreamy Dooriyan number. All the songs in fact are cult-like.
To conclude, this is a modern-day classic romance with great acting, an innovative screenplay, superb visuals, lovely songs and a dreamy ending. Imitiaz Ali is a master at making romance flicks that appeal to the youth. A personal favorite, this one is.
