Snatch (2000)

Another "chain reaction" movie from Guy Ritchie where there are a lot of characters and one action leads to the other, leading to a classy climax.

Here a diamond is the bone of contention and people like 'Franky Four Fingers', Avi, 'Bullet Tooth Tony', the Russian Boris, 3 Negros, Doug etc are involved in this.

Meanwhile, Turkish and Tommy get mixed up with 'Brick Top' over betting in an unlicensed boxing match involving 'Pikey' Mickey. Men like Errol work for 'Brick Top'.

The 2 tales coincide and all the characters are interconnected leading to the climax. As expected, there are lot of deaths and a few men escape with their dear lives as well as get some good fortune in the form of diamonds and money.

Hits
  • The non-linear screenplay particularly in the scene when Borris gets banged in the middle of the road by the Negros' car and Bullet Tooth Tony's car crashes due to the milk thrown out from Turkish's car.
  • The dialogs are too hilarious and typically British. The scene when Tony compares the Negros to a dick and 2 balls is outrageously brilliant.
  • Brad Pitt's style of speaking and his lean and mean body. Cult. His fighting scenes are short yet his bare-knuckle punches have high impact.
  • Benicio Del Toro is another man with a totally elegant yet heroic style. He is made for such casual sort of drugged roles.
  • The typical Guy Ritchie elements like jerky camera movements, groovy soundtrack, funky character names, tongue-in-cheek dialogs etc. The man sure has a unique style.
Comments
  • Quite complex and needs undivided attention as with any other Guy Ritchie movie.
VERDICT
Another complex yet casual affair involving a lot of characters in typical Guy Ritchie style. CLASSIC

Blitz (2011)

The Plot
Tom Brant is a ruthless cop who is totally mean and aggressive. He gets into trouble often, for his methods.
Suddenly, a series of cops get killed and Brant is assigned to work with Porter Nash, a senior cop to crack this case.

The serial killer is a psychotic youngster named Barry Weiss. He calls himself  'The Blitz'. He bumps off all the cops who had booked him on various cases before.

Brant and Nash track him down and bring him to his knees and dump him off in style.

Hits
  • Jason Statham is born to do such roles. Supreme punch dialogs, hyper agility in the chase sequences and that aggressive swagger are all super macho.
  • Aidan Gillen as the psycho is another reason why the film works. Nice eccentric performance with a lot of theatrics.
  • Very fast screenplay. Never a dull moment.
  • The support characters Porter Nash, Falls, Stokes etc. also play a part in making proceedings interesting.
VERDICT
Yet another Jason Statham action fiesta.

Crank: High Voltage (2009)

The Plot
Chev Chelios' heart is wanted by Poon Dong. Chev's heart is taken away and is replaced by an artificial heart that runs on battery and requires constant charge to keep it running. Chev has to be in contact with electricity or some sort of friction to stay alive.

Poon Dong is transplanted with Chev's heart and Chev's physician Doc Miles plans to get back Chev's heart from Poon Dong.

Chev is after Johnny Wang (the guy who is supposed to have his heart in a box) and El Huron - The Ferret (the brother of Verona who is after Chev for revenge)

Finally he gets his enemies as usual and stays alive inexplicably. Another sequel is definitely on the cards

Hits

  • Equally bad ass and wacky as the first part. Action and crazy fun interspersed.

  • Jason Statham rocks in this part as well and looks leaner and meaner in this part.

  • Amy Smart is hot as usual and exposes like crazy. She covers just her 3 spots else its a free for all. The sex scene with Chev in so many different positions, in full view before the public on the race track is the best example of comic porno seen in films in a long time.

  • There are some other crazy characters like the prostitute who is mad about Chev, Kaylo's twin gay brother Venus, El Huron (he even preserves Verona's head in a water box), Poon Dong, Dark Chocolate (Doc Miles' sex partner). All these characters up the fun quotient multi-fold.

Comments
  • Too much sex and female skin exposed. This is the closest to an actual porn film. Not that I am complaining.

VERDICT
A super crazy follow-up to Crank. Expecting much more in the sequel.

Crank (2006)

The Plot
Chev Chelios is given a Chinese poison by Ricardo Verona, one of his rivals. Chev is a professional hitman who is about to give up his job for the sake of his love, Eve. He doesn't kill his last target Don Kim and lets him go.

As a result of this Chinese shit that is in his system, he has only 1 hr to live and he needs constant adrenaline to keep his heart pumping. Else it'll slow down and he' ll die

His physician Doc Miles gives him all crazy ideas to keep up the adrenaline like taking in epinephrine, fucking his partner to speed up his adrenaline etc etc.

Finally he gets Verona and with the help of Don Kim he vanquishes all his enemies including Carlito. He even stays alive in the end after falling off the sky.

Hits

  • Some crazy ass entertainment. Totally wacky and full-on adrenaline rush. Hats off to the makers. Nice comic moments are interspersed in many places

  • Jason Statham is perfect for this role and such action packed roles can be done by him even in his sleep. His dialog delivery style is awesome too.

  • Amy Smart as the hot girlfriend Eve has a crazy part and the scene where she is fucked in full public view by Chev for some adrenaline, is a riot. Doc Miles is another perverted character who is always into sex but he is a constant support for Chev

Comments
  • The violence is quite over the top too.

VERDICT
Bad-ass stuff. Totally racy and pacy entertainment.

The Bank Job (2008)

The Plot
The MI5  wants to arrest Michael X who is accused of bringing drugs to London. But, Michael X has some photographs showing the princess in a compromising position. He uses these photos which are in a safety locker in the vault at the Lloyds Bank London, as blackmail and thus escapes the jail sentence.

MI5 sends a spy to work with Michael X to find the negatives of these photos and destroy them. Michael X is sort of a champion for the cause of the black population.

So now the MI5 has to remove these photos from the bank and they employ the services of a woman Martine Love who has been caught in a drug case. Martine in turn takes the services of Terry Leather and his assembled gang of 5 more men.

They succeed in getting to the vault no. 118 and also the other vaults and they steal about 4 million pounds worth of stuff and also the said photos and some other shady documents.

The police come to know of this and obviously the media too and now all the big shots who had some shady documents and photos hidden in the broken lockers are now after Terry and gang. It's not just the royal family that has some illicit stuff in the locker.

The illegal dealings of a porno filmmaker with the police and also photos of some authorities with prostitutes, find their way into the catch of Terry and co.

How they manage to free themselves from this multidimensional mess, whether all of them manage to stay alive and whether Michael X and the other tainted authorities are brought under the law, is what the ending reveals.

Hits
  • Never a dull moment. Seat edge thrills and tremendous pace in the screenplay. Be it the way the police come to know of the bank job, the way the gang goes about the job assembling men and material, the way the big shots threaten the gang and how the gang retorts back etc. etc. VERY INTERESTING MOVIE
  • Jason Statham as Terry leads the pack and is supported ably by the husky and sexy Saffron Burrows. Rest of the supporting cast fits in well too.
VERDICT
Intriguing and pacy heist movie that is complex and has many characters yet, it is bang on target.

The Expendables (2010)

What’s it about:
A team of 5 mercenaries who call themselves “Expendable” are hired by people to free hostages, eliminate targets etc etc. Each of these 5 men have their own specialties. The common link being they are all extremely macho and proud men.
The CIA hires them to go to an island called Vilena and eliminate General Garza and James Munroe, 2 men who control a big drug empire in the island. 2 of the expendables, Barney and Christmas go there and survey the place, return and decide that it is too dangerous to take up this mission. But a young woman Sandra, the daughter of Garza stays in Barney’s mind. So, the Expendables go back to the island, finish off all their innumerable enemy targets, ensure Sandra’s safety, come back unscathed and sign off in style with their bikes.

Hits
  • Absolutely terrific action from a male audience’s point of view. Fast paced entertainment.
  • Among all the expendables, it is Jason Statham who makes the best mark. His stunts from atop the plane are mind-blowing. His knife wielding style is awesome too. Jet Li has his funny moments too.
  • Mickey Rourke has the best among the many cameos

Misses
  • Sadly an over weight Arnold makes a “blink you miss” kinda cameo appearance. Bruce Willis also makes up the cameo numbers.
  • All this slam bang gunning might not appeal to all of them.

VERDICT
Sylvester Stallone says in the end that “I promise I’ll always be around”. I would love to see my hero hang around forever even if he is obviously old and jaded. Nice to see such pure adrenaline pumping stuff.
